Physical Blessings, Spiritual Responsibilities

Physical Blessings, Spiritual Responsibilities

Physical Blessings, Spiritual Responsibilities
Luke Griffin

We are surrounded by talk of double dip recession, unemployment, and world-wide economic difficulties. Sometimes it is easy to forget just how blessed we really are. America is one of the most prosperous countries in the world. We should stop and think about the things we often take for granted.

If you can go to the tap and get drinking water out of the faucet that won’t make you sick, you are more blessed than 13% of the world’s population. About 900 million people do not have safe drinking water.[i]

If you have a toilet in your house, you are more blessed than 38% of the world’s population. [ii]

If you own a car, even an old jalopy, you are more blessed than approximately 80% of people of driving age throughout the world.[iii]

If you have electricity in your home, you are more blessed than 25% of the world’s population. In third world countries an estimated 79% of people live without access to electricity.[iv]

If you had enough to eat today you are more blessed than 13% of the world’s population. Over 925 million people go hungry each day throughout the world. [v]

At the beginning of the 21st century, nearly one billion people were unable to read this article or even sign their own name.[vi]

The median household income in the U.S. is $50,221[vii]. Perhaps your household income is less than that, and perhaps it is more. Whatever your income is, I invite you to take that number and type it into the search box at http://www.globalrichlist.com/. What that will tell you is how rich you are in comparison to the rest of the world. If you take the median income in the U.S. and type it in that box, what you find is that you are in the top 1% of the people in the world. In fact, you currently would come up as the 58,943,478th richest person in the world. While it is true that won’t put you on the Fortune 500 list any time soon, it would be good to point out that this number means that there are over 6 billion, nine-hundred million people who are making less than you.

We are probably far more blessed than we have ever considered. In addition to these material things, consider this.

With these material blessings comes a spiritual responsibility (Acts 20:35; 2 Corinthians 8:7). It is our mission to spread the gospel message, and we have the means to do it.  If you know the truth about God and the Bible, and have heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ, then you are more spiritually blessed than an estimated 41% of the world’s population.[viii] The fact that God has blessed us so much by sending His son to die for our sins should push us to want to share that same blessing with as many people as we can.

There are many inexpensive ways to reach out, including inviting friends over to study the Bible, bringing someone to worship services with you, personally distributing tracts, sending out the gospel via bulk mail, answering Bible questions on the Internet/Facebook, going on a mission trip, door knocking, correspondence courses, helping with prison ministry, and many more opportunities to share the gospel and reach out to the lost world.

Typically the only thing holding us back is either a lack of knowledge or fear. Given that we have been so blessed, these will seem poor excuses indeed on the Day of Judgment. That day, every knee will bow before Christ (Romans 14:11) and every person who has ever lived will be divided into one of two categories—saved (sheep) or lost (goats) (Matthew 25:33–34). Have you considered that you can increase the population of heaven with your evangelism efforts?

Keep in mind just how blessed we are. Isn’t it time to do something?
